Carnations

Common Names: Carnation, Chinese Pinks, Pinks

Description: A delicate multi-petaled single flower up to 3 inches in diameter, atop a long stem.  Most are double forms with many ruffled petals.

Fragrance: Very light fragrance or none at all, depending on variety

Facts: Graded according to stem length and flower number for spray types. Carnations are one of some 300 species of annual, biennial and perennial herbs in the genus Dianthus, which means "flower of Zeus" in Greek. Common relatives of the carnation, a member of the Caryophyllaceae family, include sweet William, gypsophila and chickweed. Carnations are said to have sprung up from the tears of Mary as she made her way to Calvary. The pink carnation became the symbol of mother-love and of Mother's Day, created in 1907 in Philadelphia.

Meaning:  Devoted Love. Red is for my poor heart, striped for refusal, yellow for disdain, and pink for a woman's love.
